Three years after its proclamation at the United Nations, World Cleanup Day in South Kivu is focusing on environmental education as its primary theme. A group of civil society organizations is spearheading the initiative. The event will take place in Bughore, in the territory of Kabare.

“Fifteen pupils per school will be supervised by a teacher “

Action pour le Dévelopement Durable Congo (ADDC) is one of the partner NGOs. On September 20, these NGOs are organizing an environmental education awareness day. It targets three schools located near the Natural Sciences Research Center. “Fifteen pupils per school will be supervised by a teacher,” specifies Christian Bagunda, president of the NGO ADDC.

Affected by numerous health and social crises, the DRC has a large diaspora worldwide. Based in Sweden, Bagunda is mobilizing alongside international actors represented locally. His goal: to raise awareness among the younger generation about environmental issues.

This initiative aligns with the new United Nations call to action, which focuses this year on the fight against food loss. Under the theme “Clean Plates to Clean Cities,” the international day on September 20 will highlight innovative solutions to this issue.

However, for Africa, food security and dietary patterns remain major concerns. Long renowned for wholesome food derived from natural sources, the continent is now facing a surge in imported and processed foodstuffs. The proliferation of polluting packaging, combined with the exposure of fruits and vegetables to pesticides, is currently causing widespread illness and death.
