The International Energy Agency (IEA) publishes today its Renewable 2023 report. It reveals that the world added 50% more renewable capacity in 2023 than in 2022. “The level of deployment reached in 2023 makes it clear that a tripling of renewables is entirely achievable,” says Dave Jones, a programme director at global energy think tank called Ember. To him, tripling of global renewables and a doubling energy efficiency, the twin goals of COP 28, are a good opportunity to help push energy CO2 emissions down by 35% by 2030. ” 90% of the upgrade in the IEA’s forecast to last year came as China’s renewable forecast was boosted upwards,” he highlights. An Analysis by Ember shows that tripling renewables and doubling efficiency will deliver 85% of the cuts in unabated fossil fuels required by 2030. By 2035, renewables and efficiency will alone more than halve total CO2 emissions, unlocking a fossil fuel phaseout, underlines the think thank.
