COP 31: How the AGN has advanced the Global Goal on adaptation
How did the Global Goal on Adaptation emerge? Initially proposed by the African Group of Negotiators (AGN) in 2013, the Global Goal on Adaptation was embedded in the Paris Agreement at COP21 in 2015. This effort was led by Seyni Nafo, who served as the chair of the AGN during COP21. Seyni Nafo is today one of the two co-chairs of the Green Climate Fund. He also directs the Africa Adaptation Initiative alongside Kulthoum Omari. Both have been working closely since COP21 on the Global Goal on Adaptation.

Adaptation and Mitigation
As mentioned in Article 7 of the Paris Agreement, the Global Goal on Adaptation aims to enhance adaptive capacity, build resilience, and reduce vulnerability to climate change. It focuses on strengthening climate resilience, boosting adaptive capacity, and lowering vulnerability, underlines the AGN group for years.
Meanwhile, the African Group of Negotiators advocates for equal standing with mitigation efforts. The group demands therefore sufficient means of implementation, and concrete, measurable targets for developing countries.

The role of the Global Goal on Adaptation has been recently highlighted in Accra, Ghana. It was during a two day workshop on Just Transition organized by the AGN. The chairman this year of the AGN is from Ghana. Nana Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, is also one of the board members of the Green Climate Fund.
